After watching the French Open this week it occurred to me that the women players are being short changed in the major tournaments.
Important matches, like the slams, the stakes of winning or losing are very high. It seems a shame that the outcomes are determined by best out of three sets.
The rules were set for women to limit matches to three sets at a time when women were considered fragile and without the stamina of men players. We certainly know now that this was a false premise.
When we watch a women's match today we are seeing a level of play equal to the men. It seems unfair to limit the important matches to three sets. Men have the advantage to scope out their opponents strengths and weaknesses and adjust their game accordingly. When I watch a men's match, I usually feel that the best player won. When viewing women's matches I am left sometimes feeling that the best player was just getting into the groove when time ran out.
Any comments?
